The Airbus A330-300 sporting registration B-HLB had called Hong Kong its home since its maiden flight in February 1995. The aircraft originally registered as VR-HLB with the manufacturer serial number (MSN) 083 launched its career with Cathay Pacific as a 311-seat passenger plane. In July 1997, the 5-star airline re-registered the plane, leading to its final registration B-HLB.
After 16 years of service, Dragonair, partly owned by Cathay Pacific since 1990, took ownership of the Airbus A330-300. In 2006, for a price tag equivalent to USD 1.06 billion, Cathay Pacific acquired all the shares in Dragonair, renaming the airline Cathay Dragon in 2016. The plane continued to fly until August 2019, taking to the skies for the last time to San Bernardino International Airport on 27 September 2019.
At the end of 2020, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cathay Pacific had to shut down Cathay Dragon completely.
So we are all the more thrilled to be saving part of Asian aviation history for posterity and bringing it home to you!
